Honeymoon Destinations

Although the tried and tested beach honeymoon remains an ever-popular choice, newlyweds are increasingly looking to start their married lives by sharing a more adventurous holiday. Visiting two destinations in one trip allows you to get the best of both worlds, combining both exploration and escapism. We’ve detailed some of the best options for a multi-centre honeymoon below.

South Africa and Mauritius

AfricaMaurThe rainbow nation serves as a unique honeymoon destination.  If adventure is what you’re looking for, South Africa can deliver like nowhere else, with stunning mountains, coastlines and wildlife. The country’s many national parks give visitors the chance to spot the ‘big five’ animals – lions, elephants, cape buffalos, leopards and rhinoceroses. Kruger, the biggest of national parks at over 2 million hectares, has a variety of honeymoon lodges situated in private game reserves, offering ultimate luxury with a second-to-none safari experience.
You can easily follow your adventures to the African wilderness with a trip to the paradise island of Mauritius; flights from Johannesburg to SSR International are frequent and take around four and a half hours.
More than just an island of beautiful beaches, Mauritius has a rich history and an impressive blend of Indian, African, European, Chinese and Middle Eastern culture. For adventurous visitors, there is a plentiful range of exciting activities to try. The offshore reefs are full of beautiful coral bursting with wildlife and the island’s waters also lend themselves to windsurfing and deep sea fishing. Mauritius also boasts a rich supply of golf courses, which offer not only immaculate greens but unsurpassable views of the Indian Ocean. Choose from Mauritius’s extensive range of spa resorts to find your own piece of tropical luxury.

Maldives and Sri Lanka

SLMaldivesFor those looking to spend their honeymoon immersing themselves in a new culture, Sri Lanka is an inviting prospect. Steeped in history, the country’s crumbling temples offer an insight into the nation’s deeply religious culture. Temple of the Tooth, the largest in Sri Lanka and a world heritage site, is said to contain a tooth belonging to the Buddha himself. Sri Lanka contains eight world heritage sites in total, including both man-made sites and natural wonders such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Horton Plains National Park. Fast becoming renowned as one of the world’s top spa destinations, the country’s resorts offer pristine beaches and palm trees, making them the perfect place to rest your feet after a day of exploration.
Take advantage of the short distance between Sri Lanka and The Maldives and visit both as part of a multi-centre honeymoon; Malé to Colombo is an easy one and a half hour flight across the Indian Ocean.
The Maldives are blessed with picture perfect white sands and azure seas. The nation is made up of 26 ‘Atolls’ - collections of islands each with their own character and atmosphere. Whichever Atoll you choose to make your temporary home, expect to be treated like a VIP for the duration of your honeymoon by the welcoming Maldivians. If you can tear yourself away from the shores, outstanding snorkelling and diving opportunities are abundant – the crystal clear waters means coral reefs and marine animals are easily visible. With a wide choice of accommodation available, the Maldives can cater for every taste, whether you’re looking for a secluded beachfront bungalow or a contemporary spa resort.

New York and Caribbean

NYCarribWhilst New York may not be the typical honeymoon destination, the vibrant city is guaranteed to deliver an array of memorable moments. The Big Apple has, of course, a multitude of tourist attractions that will feature on every visitors list. A trip to the top of the Rockfeller centre is a must; if you’re visiting during the festive period you can also take a romantic skate round the famous ice rink. The city is a true cultural melting pot, and those looking for galleries and museums will be spoilt for choice when looking for a cultural hit. For honeymooners looking to experience a city that has it all, NYC is an unbeatable option.
Combine the bright lights of the city with the best of the beach by stopping off in both New York and the Caribbean on your honeymoon; many flight operators provide direct services from New York with flight times from around three hours, depending on your Caribbean destination.
The Caribbean remains an ever-popular honeymoon hot spot, providing an eternally laid-back and friendly ambience. With rum punch and calypso in abundance it’s easy to sink into island life, especially while unwinding on a sun-drenched beach. Each of the island nations that make up the Caribbean has something unique to offer; St Lucia’s lush rainforests deliver opportunities for exploration, Grenada is a paradise for divers, while St Bart’s remains the playground of the rich and famous. One thing is for sure, within minutes of setting foot on the Caribbean isles, the pressures of modern life will melt away.
