If you are planning to head overseas to work, whether this be a permanentl career change or seasonally for bar work, holiday rep or volunteer for a charity you’ll need to ensure you are covered for unforeseen events that may occur whilst you’re working abroad.

Travel insurance will provide cover for the usual things including medical expenses, cancellations, delayed and lost baggage and more. With our business travel cover this is extended to cover lost, theft, damage and destruction of any work equipment (such as mobile phones and laptops) and also covers a replacement colleague replacing you should you need to cut short your trip.

To be eligible to take out any travel insurance you need to be a UK resident for tax purposes and registered with a UK doctor.

The best option to be covered whilst working abroad will depend upon the length of time you plan to be working overseas for, and what kind of work you are undertaking.

Our single trip business travel insurance policies provide cover for trips of up to 180 days, so could be a suitable option if you are working seasonally or have a role which allows you to work from outside the UK for up to 6 months per year.

If you are planning to work abroad permanently or longer than 180 days at once, then you may wish to consider an international health insurance policy, which is designed for more permanent overseas work and expatriates.

Personal liability cover protects you if you injure someone or damage their property whilst abroad and they attempt to claim damages from you. Our policies do provide cover for personal liability but this only applies when you are not working.

Normally, you’ll find that your employer already provides personal liability cover for incidents that occur during work time. Make sure to check this with them, and if that’s not the case separate cover may be needed.

In order to get covered you need to be a UK resident and registered with a doctor in the United Kingdom, this makes it a suitable option for work travel, seasonal work abroad or charity work.

For international health insurance these requirements are not imposed which makes them more suitable for permanent jobs abroad and working holiday visas outside of the UK.

Currently yes. We can offer protection for seasonal jobs to digital nomads, administrative to mechanical, and whilst working with machinery does carry a higher risk, so long as you have taken out our business cover add on then you can be covered.
If you are heading abroad to teach English, volunteer with animals or work on conservation projects in a charitable capacity then you will still require a policy that allows you to undertake work. It would be worth discussing with the organisation you are volunteering to understand all of your duties and check that against the policy terms and conditions to ensure you’re protected.

Our standard single trip travel insurance or annual multi-trip travel insurance policies on their own are designed primarily for holidaymakers, as such they will not cover you for business equipment or issues caused whilst you are working abroad.

In order to get covered for working overseas, you’ll want to consider a business travel insurance policy.

Our backpacker travel insurance policies offer cover for up to 365 days and is focused on gap year travelling rather than overseas work for longer period of time.

Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.

Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.

Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.

If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.

Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

Having a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will entitle you to the government-provided healthcare of the European Union country you are visiting and lowering the medical costs you would normally expect to pay. Although this is a good addition to take on holiday, it should not be seen as a replacement for travel insurance which could provide you with further protection and peace of mind whilst you are abroad. Our travel insurance policies can protect you against many unforeseen eventualities.
With our Group travel insurance policies, you can include your travelling work party on the same policy, so several employees can be protected.
